ASX rallies 1pct to close at a 6-week high

The local share market rallied to its highest level in six weeks after hints the US might take a break from its campaign to hike interest rates.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index closed near the highs of the day, up 66.5 points, or 0.97 per cent, to 6,889.7.

The broader All Ordinaries on Thursday gained 77.8 points, or 1.11 per cent, to 7,115.9

The Aussie dollar meanwhile was buying more than 70 US cents for the first time since mid-June.

It was trading for 70.08 US cents, from 69.34 US cents at Wednesday's close.
