Noosa Mining & Exploration Conference 2012

The Noosa Mining and Exploration Conference took place on 19 and 20 July at the Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort and Spa. This two-day conference enables resource investors to meet and hear from Australian resource developers in a relaxed environment.

For those who weren't able to attend, highlights can be found below:

Presentations

Key Note Speaker: Michael Wadley

We were lucky to have Michael Wadley, Senior China Consultant for international law firm Ashurst (formerly Blake Dawson), attend the conference as Key Note Speaker. Michael has lived in China for over a decade andhas assisted a large number of Australian, Chinese and foreign businesses to establish and manage operations in China and Australia. His views are consistent with our house view that commodity markets are merely in a classic cyclical downturn – not a demand dislocation.

Oil & Gas

Ten energy companies presented during the Conference. Overall the presenters were upbeat about the outlook for energy demand with Asia being the key driver of this growth. Another theme was the interest oflarger companies in partnering the small/mid cap companies to utilise their balance sheets and expertise toevaluate and develop projects.

These themes are consistent with our expectations for the sector going forward and we retain our positive disposition to the sector as a whole.

Metals

A number of listed resources companies presented at the Conference. Overall, the presenters were upbeat citing long term demand projections were likely to see a recovery in the prices of iron ore and copper as China demand picks up, and supply expansion struggles to meet it.

In precious metals, we noted several companies on our investment radar are in the process of transitioning into production or expanding production which is a key value driver in the life of a mining stock. In the explorers we noted several companies which have advanced over the last 12 months and are now in the position to release maiden resources and Feasibility studies.
