As part of the latest Morgans Executive Series, I sat down with Peter Birtles, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Super Retail Group. The discussion focussed around the story of Super Retail Group and building the BCF concept, the acquisition of Rebel Sport and the threat and opportunity of Amazon in Australia:
"They will come and they will be a really strong competitor in Australia, but that doesn't mean that they will necessarily take all of Australian retail. I think there's been a bit of an overreaction on that. We've seen in markets where Amazon are very strong that there is a very clear role for businesses that are true specialists in their area and that they deliver a proposition to the customer that's much more than just product and price. That's where we think we've got a great opportunity."
Peter also touched on the future of retail and offered some words of advice for executives and entrepreneurs. Peter has been Group MD and CEO for 12 years.
